Child Health Nursing

Placement & Description

Placement: GNM Second Year. Total Hours: 70. This course is designed to help the students to develop and understand the concept of child health, the trends in child care and the health problems of children. This shall enable the students to meet the needs of the children, in health and sickness.

General Objectives

  • 1: Upon completion of this course, the students shall able to: Explain the concept of child health, the principles underlying child care trends in pediatric nursing.
  • 2: Describe normal growth and development of children, so as to recognize the deviations from normal health and care of healthy children.
  • 3: Demonstrate skill in meeting the needs of the sick infants and children based on the IMNCI (Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness) guidelines of Government of India (GoI).

Course Syllabus Units

  1. 1Unit I: Introduction & Growth and DevelopmentModern concept in child health care, trends in pediatric nursing, role of pediatric nurses, emerging challenges, nursing process related to pediatric nursing, concept of preventive pediatric, vital statistics. Growth and development: definition, principles, factors affecting growth and development, techniques of assessment, plotting of growth chart. Infant, toddler, preschooler, and school-ager growth, development, nutritional needs, play, accidents, and care.
  2. 2Unit III: The Sick ChildRole of the sick child's family in coping with hospitalization, child's reaction to hospitalization, role of nurse in minimizing stress. Pediatric procedures: preparation and administration of oral and parenteral medication, administration of oxygen, inhalation, nebulization, pediatric resuscitation. Disorders and health problems of child: failure to thrive, diarrhea and vomiting, respiratory disorders, communicable diseases.
  3. 3Unit VI: Child with Congenital Disorders & Systemic DisordersEtiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, complications, preventive, medical, surgical and nursing management of congenital anomalies (cleft lip/palate, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, congenital heart defects, genitourinary, gastrointestinal). Respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders (malabsorption, Hirschsprung's, worm infestation), cardiovascular, hematological, neurological, endocrine, developmental problems, locomotor problems.
  4. 4Unit VII: Child Welfare ServicesVarious child welfare services provided by governmental and non-governmental agencies. Ethical and legal implication in pediatric nursing. Child welfare services and agencies: ICDS, midday meal program, Balwadi, daycare centers, National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP). Law pertaining to pediatrics: National child labour policy, child act, juvenile justice act, internationally accepted rights of the child, rehabilitation of delinquent and destitute children. Adoption laws and services, adolescent health programs.
